1. Introduction
I have prepared this seminar work about the town of Šempeter because I live there and I work as a school secretary at Ivan Rob Elementary school in Šempeter.
So I would like to learn as much as possible about our town, because when a foreigner comes I want to tell him or her a lot about life and interesting sights in Šempeter.
2. General data

History
The area of today's Šempeter was settled already in the 12th century BC. In the Roman period, the settlement was named Torgium. Its name »De sancto Pietro« was first mentioned around the year 1200 in a list belonging to the Counts of Gorizia. In the Middle Ages, documents referred to the place as »prope Goritiam«, meaning »near Gorizia«. Since then its name has not changed.
Church
The construction of a church – St Peter's Church – began in 1425. Unfortunately, during World War I the church was destroyed. It was immediately reconstructed after World War I.
The Coronini Castle is situated in the centre of Šempeter. It was built at the end of the 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century. The family Coronini-Cromberg owned the castle.
The watchtower
This eight-meter-high tower is the smallest museum in Slovenia. Until Slovenia's declaration of independence, it was used by the Yugoslav army. Jakob Marušič, a historian, and Boris Blažek, a designer, decorated the interior with various photographs depicting everyday life along the Slovene-Italian border.
Hospital
Šempeter is also a very important health service centre - General Hospital Dr Franc Derganc is situated there. It opened its doors right after World War II, in 1945.
Šempeter’s surrounding
Šempeter and its surrounding can be referred to as the garden of Goriška (Slovene region) with numerous woods, vineyards, fields, meadows and gardens.
On the slopes of the Markov hrib (Mark’s Hill) stands a villa, named Mafejšče (Maffei), which was probably built at the beginning of the 18th century
Tourists who visit Šempeter can taste many delicious specialities of the Mediterranean cuisine at the Lipa Hotel, situated on the main Šempeter square, or the Mark restaurant on the top of Mark’s Hill.
Preserving the tradition
The national costume has undergone many changes in the past centuries. Today we know which clothes were worn at the beginning of the 20th century. They are very interesting, beautiful and play a very important role in preserving the national tradition.
